Ihan eka huivi/The first shawl ever

En ole oikein koskaan ollut innostunut pitsineuleista tai varsinkaan huiveista. En edes osaa sanoa, miksi olen niitä vältellyt. Ehkä yksi syy on siinä, että pitsihuivit näyttävät vaikeilta tehdä. On niin paljon kavennuksia ja langankiertoja ja muuta, johon en ole perehtynyt. Itse kun olen aina ollut enemmän palmikkoneuleiden ystävä. Toinen syy voi olla se, että olen pitänyt huiveja vain vanhojen naisten asusteena. Ennakkoluuloja on monenlaisia, mutta onneksi rohkaisin mieleni ja päätin kokeilla huivin neulomista.

Paikallisessa lankaliikkeessä oli näytillä Titanium- niminen huivi ja se vaikutti sellaiselta huivilta, jonka pitsineulenoviisi voisi sopia. Langaksi valitsin merinovillalangan, joka vaikutti sopivan pehmeältä.

Huivista tuli ihan asiallinen eikä pahoja mokia sattunut. Kun vielä opin lukemaan kaaviota oikein päin eli riviltä 1 riville 24 eikä toisin päin, niin huivin tekeminen tuntui helpolta... Pingottaminenkin sujui ongelmitta ja huivi on jo käytössä.

I have never been a fan of lace patterns or expecially interested in shawls. I don't know exactly why I have thought this way. One reason could be that the lace shawls look difficult to knit. There are a lot of decreases and yarn overs and other things that I'm have not been so familiar with. I have rather knitted cables. The other reason for not to make lace shawls can be that I have thought that only very old ladies are wearing them. As you can see, I had some prejudices, but luckily I got the courage to knit a shawl.

The Titanium shawl was displayed in the local yarn shop  and I immediately decided that this is the shawl I want to knit. The yarn is soft merino wool.

The shawl turned out to be beautiful and I didn't make any big mistakes. Knitted went well after I finally understood that lace chart is read from the row 1 to row 24, not the other way around...

This pattern suits well for the first lace pattern. I recommend it :-)

Viime vuotisia/Last year's projects

Nyt uskaltaa jo kirjoittaa joululahjaksi annetuista projekteista. Täytyy vain toivoa, että lahjat menivät käyttöön eivätkä laatikon alimmaiseksi.

Pienille kummipojille lähti lahjaksi villatakkia ja kettu- ja susipipoja. Villatakin langat saattavat näyttää tutulta ja ne ovatkin kerien loppuja neulepeitoista, joita tein viime vuonna tytöilleni. Tulipahan käytettyä nekin langat loppuun.

Now I can write about last year's Christmas presents without spoiling a surprise. I just hope that those presents are used daily whenever it is cold enough to wear them.

I knitted wolf and fox hats and a cardigan to my god sons. The yarns of the cardigan might look familiar. The yarns are actually the same than I used in the blankets I made last year to both of my girls. I'm glad that I found a right project to use them.

Valmis syksyyn/Ready for the Autumn

Nyt sai toinenkin tyttö uuden peiton syksyä varten. Nyt näitä on kotona kaksi lämmittämässä pieniä varpaita. Oma toiveeni on, että tytöt pitäisivät peitoista niin hyvää huolta, että he voisivat ottaa ne omaan kotiinsa mukaan, sitten joskus.

Tuntuu siltä, että tämän ohjeen kanssa ei voi mennä pieleen. Värejä saa käyttää runsaasti ja ohje huomioi eri värisävyt todella upeasti. Ei voi muuta kuin ihmetellä hienoa ohjetta.

I just finished the second Hue Shift Afghan blanket. This was made to my oldest daughter. This means that everything is ready for the Autumn. I have now two of these blankets at home to keep the little toes warm. My wish is that my girls would keep so good care of the blankets that they could take the blanket with them when they leave from home to study. 

I feel that with one can't go wrong with this pattern. You can use what ever colours you want and the pattern rewards you with the gorgeous outcome. I just can't stop to admire the beauty of the pattern.

Enää 95 ruutua jäljellä/Only 95 squares to go

Oli ihan pakko aloittaa taas Hue Shift Afghan -peiton neulominen. Etsin monta päivää hyviä peitto-ohjeita, mutta päädyin jälleen kerran tähän peittoon. Parasta tässä ohjeessa on, että värejä saa käyttää runsaasti. Ei tarvitse ujostella yhtään.

I had to start to knit once again the Hue Shift Afghan blanket. I searched for good blanket patterns couple of days, but didn't find any better than the Hue Shift. The best thing in this pattern is that use of colors is allowed.

Tälläkin kertaa suunnittelu alkoi väreistä ja alku näytti tältä:
First I made a preliminary draft for the colors and it looked like this:

 

 Sen jälkeen kävin ostamassa suunnitelmaa vastaavat langat.
Janne (Gjestal) -langasta ei löytynyt kaikkia värisävyjä, joten osa kirkkaimmista kevätväreistä on Smart -lankaa (Sandnes Garn).

After the draft I looked for the yarns. I used two yarns: Janne (Gjestal) and Smart (Sandnes Garn). The Smart had better variety of brighter Spring colors.

Katsotaan nyt, miten projekti etenee. Toivottavasti valmista tulee ennen kesän helteitä.

After couple of days, there are 95 squares to knit. Totally I need 100 squares to finish the blanket.

Keppihevonen/Hobby horse

Näin niin ihanan keppihevosen ohjeen eräässä vanhassa Käsityökerho -lehdessä, että sitä oli ihan pakko lähteä ompelemaan. Tämä heppa valmistui juuri sopivasti n. 10  tuntia ennen tyttären 9-vuotissynttäreiden alkamista. Voi ihanuutta :-)

Ohjeessa kehotettiin käyttämään venymätöntä villakangasta, mutta itse käytin varastossa ollutta samettia. Hyvin onnistui siitäkin. Harjaksi käytin kaikkia vanhoja lankoja, joita olin hamstrannut varmaankin jotakin pientä ihanuutta varten. Tähän ne kävivät tosi hyvin.

Couple of weeks ago I saw a beautiful hobby horse in one Finnish craft magazine . I knew I had to make one for my oldest daughter. I managed to finish this just 10 hours before the birthday party. What  a lovely toy this is :-)

In the pattern instruction it was said that one should use wool fabric, but I used the old velvet that I had in stash and it worked out just fine. For the mane I used the old wool yarns, also from my stash.

The pattern and the instructions can be found from here (only in Finnish). The pattern is on the pdf-file (keppihevosen kaava.pdf). If needed, I can translate the main points. The estimated time for making this is about 10 hours.

Uusi peitto/New blanket

Edellisen neulepeiton jälkeen teki mieli tehdä uusi peitto, mutta tällä kertaa virkkaamalla. En ollut virkannut pitkään aikaan. Edellinen kerta taisi olla miltei 10 vuotta sitten. No, pienellä kertauskurssilla ja muutamalla youtube-videolla selvisin alkuun ja siitä sitten valmiiseen peittoon asti. Peitosta tuli varsin hyvännäköinen, vaikka itse sanonkin.

 After the first knitted blanket I wanted to make another blanket, but this time I decided that it should be done with crochet techinique. I haven't crocheted for a long time: I think that the last time was about 10 years ago. After a short training course and couple of youtube videos I managed to start the process. I'm so happy that I finish the blanket and it turned out to be beautiful.
